One of the key differences separating more and less successful mathematics students is the extent to which they take charge of their own learning. More successful students are able to set learning goals, seek resources and support to help them learn the required content, monitor their learning as they go, then reflect on their progress and change tack as needed. But how can we help more students be more self-regulated in their learning? In this keynote, Ollie Lovell will share a collection of novel approaches to scaffolding learner independence that originate from the self-regulated learning literature as well as his current PhD research in this area.
